HKLA provided complete landscape architectural design and construction administration services for the revitalization of the central courtyard at St. Joan of Arc Catholic School in Scarborough. The project transformed a dated and underutilized outdoor space into a vibrant, accessible, and multi-functional environment that supports learning, recreation, social interaction, and community gathering. The design introduced a variety of contemporary landscape elements including permeable paving systems, PurePave surfacing, enhanced planting areas, accessible circulation routes, outdoor fitness amenities, site furnishings, gathering spaces, and upgrades to the existing amphitheatre. A key design objective was to maximize the usability of the courtyard while preserving the mature tree canopy and respecting the site’s unique character,

Working closely with the owner, school representatives, arborists, and contractors throughout construction, HKLA guided the project from detailed design through completion. The revitalized courtyard now serves as an outdoor destination for students and staff, providing  flexible spaces for education, informal gatherings, outdoor programming, and special events. Through careful attention to accessibility, sustainability, tree preservation, and high-quality materials, the project has created a welcoming and resilient landscape that enhances the daily experience of the school community while celebrating the site’s existing natural assets.
