The Pumphouse Marsh Lookout project aimed to redevelop the existing wildlife viewing area along the western shoreline of the Pumphouse Marsh Wildlife Reserve. The goal of the project was to replace the existing lookout dock and tower, which had become inaccessible, dilapidated, and hazardous. The redevelopment included a new lookout structure, floating dock, accessible pathway, educational signage, and restoration plantings. All features were designed to provide an accessible, durable, educational, and functional solution for this important public and conservation amenity.

The City of Oshawa had numerous accessibility and maintenance requirements that were successfully addressed through the redevelopment. The Central Lake Ontario Conservation Authority (CLOCA) and the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) also established stringent environmental requirements that guided the design. In addition to the physical improvements, the scope included the development of interpretive signage program from concept through detailed design, including topic selection, content development, image sourcing, graphic layout, and sign panel design. The resulting educational elements support conservation awareness and provide meaningful learning opportunities for visitors and local schools.

Kyle Foch was retained to provide conceptual design, design development, construction documentation, interpretive signage design, permitting, tendering support, and construction contract administration services for the project. Although there were significant budget constraints, the firm delivered an affordable and effective solution through several design iterations. The project successfully attained Substantial Completion in December 2023.
