HKLA was retained by Toronto Community Housing Corporation (TCHC) to provide landscape architectural services for the design and enhancement of the May Birchard Community Garden. The project focused on revitalizing an underutilized outdoor space into an accessible, functional, and welcoming community amenity that supports gardening, social interaction, and resident wellbeing. Services included site investigations, preparation of a Tree Inventory, Preservation and Protection Plan (TIPP), design development, and coordination with project stakeholders to ensure the design responded to both site opportunities and operational requirements.
The design introduced accessible hardscape improvements, raised planters, seating and gathering areas, fencing, site furnishings, and landscape enhancements that improve usability, safety, and long-term durability. Particular attention was given to accessibility, ease of maintenance, and creating a comfortable outdoor environment that encourages resident participation and community stewardship.
HKLA provided detailed construction documentation, tender support, and construction administration services throughout implementation, including site reviews and coordination with the contractor during construction. The project is currently in the final stages of construction, with finishing works and planting activities underway as the revitalized community garden approaches completion.
